Lisburn Sharks Water Polo team start the season in style

On Saturday 27th October, Lisburn City Swimming Club’s water polo team participated in their first tournament of the season at the Lagan Valley Leisure Plex.  Both players and the coach were very excited about this tournament, which heralded the start of the new season.

The first match was against the Dolphins (Diamonds).  The superior skills and ball control displayed by the rest of the Lisburn Sharks allowed Coral McDowell and Callum Bryson to find the back of the net on 3 separate occasions, winning 3-0.

Second match against Corrib was even more intense as they had used the time during the first match to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the Lisburn Sharks.  Corrib played a defensive game but to no avail as the good team working of the Sharks allowed Coral McDowell, Cameron McDowell and Callum Bryson to score three superb goals, winning again 3-0.

The second win of the day meant that the Sharks were their individual Group winners and had gained a place in the semi-finals.

The next game was against Cathal Brugha (Piranha’s), which for Lisburn should have been publicised as a ‘David meets Goliath’ match.  At half time, the Sharks were 2-0 down but despite some gallant efforts, where the Sharks clawed back 2 more goals, the Piranha’s scored 2 more goals in the closing minutes.  The final score was 4-2 to the Piranha’s.  The inexperience of the Sharks team resulted in them having 3 goals disallowed so hopefully during the next competition the Sharks will be avenged.

A big well done to the players for getting to this stage on their first outing of the season and hopefully as the season progresses they will go from strength to strength and add some silver to the Lisburn City Swimming Club’s cabinet.

A massive thank you, from both players and parents, to their coaches Nathan and Maureen for all the hard work that was put into the training and to Nathan for supporting them on Saturday.  We all hope your voice will recover soon.

Watch out, Lisburn Sharks will be back even better and more determined in a pool near you soon. Good Luck ! Photographs on the website soon
